On Elance, payments can be made in US dollars and any of the currencies listed below for supported credit cards, excluding American Express:
- Australian Dollars (AUD)
- Canadian Dollars (CAD)
- British Pound Sterling (GBP)
- Euro (EUR)
Elance also offers the ability to make payments in both US dollars (USD) and Euros (EUR) with your Paypal account.
*Elance displays foreign currency conversion rates available to you. These rates adjust regularly based on market conditions. Please note that the wholesale exchange rates at which we obtain foreign currency will usually be different than the rates available to you on our website. Your financial institution may charge fees directly to the card you use to fund a cross-border payment even where no currency conversion is involved.
Freelancers will continue to receive payments in their Elance accounts in US Dollars.
Making payments in local currency
After setting your preferences, any payments made on Elance using your credit card or Paypal account with a local currency selection will be made in local currency. The conversion rate will appear on all Invoices and the Transaction History page (Click Manage/Transactions) of your Elance account. Note, this does not include credit card authentication charges, which are processed in US dollars.
For clients, this includes:
- Funding Escrow for fixed price job milestones
- Paying for a Featured Job Post
- Paying Miscellaneous or Bonus payments to freelancers
- Manual payment of freelancer timesheets
- Auto-Pay for hourly jobs
For freelancers this includes:
- Paying for additional Connects
- Freelancer membership fees, including auto-renewal of the monthly membership fee
Setting up your currency preference
To make payments in one of these supported local currencies, add or edit your credit card or Paypal on the Financial Accounts page of your Elance and follow the steps outlined below to set your currency preferences. After setting your currency preferences, any future payments made on Elance using this card or Paypal account will be completed in your preferred currency. This includes Auto-Pay for hourly job payments to freelancers, Job Post upgrades like Featured Job Post, freelancer membership fees, and others. After selecting a currency, you can Edit you credit card or Paypal at any time to assign a different currency for future payments:
If you are adding a new credit card or Paypal account:
- From the Financial Accounts page, enter the account details for your new credit card or Paypal account.
- Select your preferred currency for payment and click Submit.
If you are editing a credit card or Paypal account:
- From the Financial Accounts page, locate your credit card or Paypal account.
- Click Edit or Change Currency to select your preferred currency for payment.
- Click Submit.
Refunds in local currency
Refunds are processed and paid according to the currency in which payment was made. The foreign currency conversion rate available at the time the refund is being processed will be used to determine the final value amount of the refund up to 100% of the original payment amount. If for any reason the currency conversion rate is unavailable at the time of refund, the refund will be processed and deposited into your Elance account in US dollars.
