How to switch from Fixed Price to Hourly and vice versa

If you have an active job that needs to be switched from from Fixed Price to Hourly or vice versa, this can be done through the Terms & Milestones section of your workroom.  On the top right of the Terms & Milestones page, click Change to Fixed Price Job or Change to Hourly Job and then complete the information on the next page to modify the job. See below for how jobs are managed when making this change.

Alternately, a job type can be changed from your My Elance page. To do so, click My Elance. Under the job’s name, click the Actions drop-down and select Change to Fixed Price Job or Change to Hourly Job.

Note:  In order to change a job type, the job must be awarded. Once awarded, changes can then be made as described below.

For Hourly jobs changing to Fixed Price jobs

A)  If no payments have been made

  • Either party may switch the job to a Fixed Price job.

  • The current job will be voided which will not affect either party’s stats or show up on your Job History.

  • A brand new job with the same name will be created and set to working status.

  • All files and messages will remain in the original jobs workroom which will still be available through your My Jobs link.

B)  If no payments have been made but there are outstanding invoices

  • Only the Freelancer can submit a change to the job since there are outstanding invoices.

  • The current job will be voided which will not affect either party’s stats or show up on your Job History.

  • A brand new job with the same name will be created and set to working status.

  • Any outstanding invoices will be deleted when the job is voided.

  • All files and messages will remain in the original jobs workroom which will still be available through your My Jobs page.

C)  If payments have been made

  • Either party may switch the job.

  • Since payments have been made the job will be marked as Complete and a brand new job with the same name will be created and set to working status.

  • Any outstanding invoices continue to remain active.

  • All files and messages will remain in the original jobs workroom which will still be available through your My Jobs page.

For Fixed Price jobs changing to Hourly jobs

A)  If no payments have been made

  • Either party may switch the job to an Hourly job.

  • The current job will be voided which will not effect either parties stats or show up on your Job History.

  • A brand new job with the same name will be created and set to working status.

  • All files and messages will remain in the original jobs workroom which will still be available through your My Jobs page.

B)  If there are funds in Escrow

  • In order to change this job to Hourly, there must be no funds held in escrow.

  • Freelancers can go to Billing & Invoices to send a release request to the Client or either party can go to Terms & Milestones to zero out the milestones.

  • Once the funds have been released from Escrow the job can then be changed to Hourly.

C)  If there have been payments made

  • Either party may switch the job.

  • Since payments have been made the job will be marked as Complete and a brand new job with the same name will be created and set to working status.

  • All files and messages will remain in the original jobs workroom which will still be available through your My Jobs page.

Note: If a job is changed  from Fixed Price to Hourly, the Authorized Hours on that job will automatically be set to 0 and Auto-Pay will be turned off. As a Freelancer, you can propose new Authorized Hours for this Repeat Project, thereby initiating a terms change to your Client. Upon Client approval of these new Authorized Hours, Auto-Pay will be re-enabled when the Hourly rate becomes effective the following Monday after the terms are accepted. For more information on Auto-Pay click here.
