Freelancer Profile Identity Policies

As the world's most trusted and secure marketplace for online work, Elance requires that all Members establish and maintain a profile true to their real identity. To become a Freelancer and access site services, you must provide true, accurate and complete information as prompted by the registration form and update this information to maintain its truthfulness, accuracy and completeness. Below are more details regarding our policies for Freelancer profiles.

Who can establish a Freelancer account on Elance?

Freelancers on Elance must be a legal entity or a business individual 18 years or older.  Individual Members must be able to form legally binding contracts.    

What identity information must be supplied to set up an account?

The following rules apply to all Freelancers.  All provided information must be accurate and Elance reserves the right to ask for additional details to verify the account.

  • You must use your own legal name.

  • You must use your own contact information.

  • The Freelancer location information must identify where the work is done. (Ex:  If you are an American working in London, for example, your location must be “London.”)

  • Freelancers on Elance may only have a total of one Freelancer account and one Client account, without express written permission from Elance.  However, Freelancers may be a Team Member of another account as provided in our User Agreement.

  • Freelancers cannot use Elance’s name in the profile name (ex:  Elance_Writer).

What is the thumbnail policy for Freelancers?

Freelancers may post a thumbnail image on the Site to accompany your profile. All thumbnails must follow these common guidelines:

  • You must own the image or have a license to use the image.

  • The image must be professional.

  • Uploaded image must be .jpg, .jpeg or .gif format. (Animated .gif files are not allowed.)

  • The thumbnail may be left blank.

If you are a Freelancer with an Individual Member or a Team Member account, then in addition to the common guidelines above, your thumbnail image must also follow these additional guidelines:

  • The image must be a portrait that is a truthful representation or you (no stock photos, fakes, or logos).

  • An avatar of reasonable likeness is acceptable. However, individuals who wish to complete the ID Verification process are required to have a photo.

  • Group photos are not acceptable. Other individuals must be removed from the photo.

  • Very small images are not acceptable. You must be identifiable in the image.

How do Elance's identity policies apply to Freelancers who are also Team Members?

An individual Team Member account must comply with the same identity requirements for Individual Memberships.

  • Each Team Member must be a real person

  • Each Team Member profile / Account must contain the Team Member’s real name, must comply with all Terms of Service governing accounts, and must comply with the thumbnail image policy for Individual Accounts set forth in the Terms of Service.

  • Elance reserves the right to require any Team Member’s identity to be verified at any time

Can Freelancer accounts be shared?

Elance expects that the Individual or Business identified in the account will be the one who utilizes the account.

  • Individual accounts cannot be shared between users

  • Elance accounts cannot be transferred or sold to other users

  • Team Members cannot share or transfer log-in credentials

What content cannot be included in the Freelancer account profile?

A Freelancer profile cannot contain any of the following:

  • Any contact details (ex: non-Elance website URL, email address) outside of the designated areas

  • Offers to receive payments outside of the Elance Billing & Payment System

  • Offers to provide free services

  • Offers to provide services that are against the Terms of Service of Elance or of another company or entity

  • Any text that is copied from another Member’s profile

  • Any work sample to which the Freelancer does not have legal rights or ownership

  • Reference to another Member's name or logo in a way that misleads or falsely implies a relationship with that Member

Can Elance require that I provide additional information to verify my information?

Yes, Elance reserves the right to ask for verification details at any time. If you are unable to provide the appropriate verification information, your account can be subject to penalty up to and including termination.
