How do I select a Freelancer job?

To hire a Freelancer for your job, simply post your job on Elance and choose from the candidates who respond with their Proposals. Alternatively, you have the ability to search for specific Freelancers and invite them to your job by clicking Hire Me on their profile page.

Once your job is posted, you will start receiving Proposals, sometimes within hours. Visit Elance University (See Hiring on Elance/Finding & Hiring) to learn more about what you should look for in a Freelancer's Profile and Proposal.

When you’ve decided on your Freelancer and want to proceed with awarding the job, log in to your Elance account and follow the steps below:

  1. Click My Elance in the top navigation bar.

  2. Next, click name of the job that you wish to award from your My Jobs list. From here, your list of candidates and their Proposals is visible.

  3. When you have chosen a candidate to work with, click on the Select button to the right of the proposal.

  4. Review the proposed terms, if you agree click Confirm. If it is necessary to make adjustments, click Edit Terms to make changes, including the start or end date, the Milestones, amount or other contract documents. Once you are satisfied, click the Continue button near the bottom of the page.

  5. Your Freelancer will then review the terms and Milestones that have been submitted and will either accept the job or propose new terms.

  6. If the Freelancer updates the terms, you will be notified and will have the chance to accept, decline or modify before the job begins.

When evaluating Freelancers, consider the following before making your decision:

  • The Proposal should be tailored to your specific needs, demonstrate knowledge and expertise, and fit within the parameters you set. Watch our Quick Start video to learn more about reviewing Proposals.

  • Review the Freelancer's profile for their Recommend Score, Level ranking and Feedback from other Clients, view their Portfolio, see what skills they possess, as well as the additional information they provide in the Summary Section. Watch our Quick Start video to learn more about what to look for in a Freelancer's profile.

  • Each job post has an expiration date, but you are free to select a Freelancer before the deadline or extend your job post availability if needed. Learn more about the job post and advanced settings in our Quick Start videos here.

  • If a Freelancer asks you to go outside Elance to avoid paying Elance fees we ask that you report the violation and recommend that you choose a Freelancer that adheres to the Terms of Service.

How do I view Proposals that I received?

To see the Proposals for your job, log into Elance and follow the steps below:

  1. Click My Elance in the top navigation bar.

  2. Click on the job name or number of Proposals received for the job in question.  Some Proposals will be submitted with sponsored placement to get better visibility.  Elance does not endorse these Proposals with sponsored placement, as they are submitted as such at the Freelancer's discretion.

  3. Review the Proposal comments. Click on a Freelancer's username to view their detailed profile, Portfolio and Feedback.

  4. Click on the Message Board (i.e. the envelope) icon on the far right of the Freelancer's Proposal if you wish to schedule an interview.  If a Freelancer has placed a Proposal without an amount specified, it means that Freelancer is requesting additional information in order to submit their Proposal. Make sure to answer their detailed questions so you can clarify the scope of the job, allowing the Freelancer to then place an accurate Proposal amount. Please note, a proposal amount is not required in order for you to select and hire a Freelancer for your project.

How do I rate Proposals?

Proposals are initially displayed under the Main Proposals tab. From here, you have the option to select, hide or rate any of your proposals for easier sorting.  Note when you choose to hide a proposal, it will be placed under the Other Proposals tab.

To rate a Proposal, log into your Elance account and follow the steps below:

  1. Under My Elance click the My Jobs link.

  2. Click the job name you for which you want to evaluate your Proposals.

  3. For each Proposal, fill in the Rate Proposal circles to the top right.  These ratings are only visible to you, and simply the ranking process.

To sort all of your Proposals, click the Sort link at the top right of the Proposal list.

How do I hire multiple freelancers from one Job Post?

You can hire multiple Freelancers for your job by repeating the selection process for different candidates on the same job. Just award the same job to as many Freelancers as you want to do the work. This can be useful for testing multiple candidates with small jobs before selecting a Freelancer to move forward with.

To hire multiple Freelancers from one job post, please log in to your Elance account and follow the steps below:

  1. Click My Elance in the top navigation bar.

  2. Click on the job name.

  3. Scroll down and choose the first Freelancer you wish to hire by clicking on their green Select button on the far right of their Proposal. If you wish to leave the job posting open for additional proposal submissions, please be sure to check the box After I award, keep the job open so more candidates may apply.

  4. After hiring is completed, return to the My Jobs page by clicking My Elance.

  5. If you opted to leave your job posting open, repeat the steps above for your second, third, etc. hire. If you opted to close the posting with your first hire, click on the title of your new, Working job. Click Proposals from the menu on the left.

  6. You will then see the list of all the Freelancers who originally submitted a Proposal. Scroll down to click on the Select button of the next Freelancer you would like to hire.

You may repeat this process as many times as you like to hire multiple Freelancers from the same job post.
