How do Basic Members access Connects?

Freelancers subscribed to our Basic Membership are given 40 Connects each month as part of their membership. For more information on Connects and how they're used to submit proposals, click here.

In order to access all 40 Connects, Freelancers must accomplish a series of tasks to create a complete Elance profile. These steps are only required of Freelancers on a Basic membership plan and they only need to be completed once.  After completing these steps and accessing all 40 Connects, Freelancers on a Basic membership plan will be able to access 40 Connects each month moving forward.

Freelancers on a Premium (paid) Membership plan can bypass these requirements and access all of their available Connects immediately, after entering Basic Profile Information and completing email verification. Learn how to upgrade your Freelancer membership plan here.

Basic profile information

To access 10 Connects, you must complete Basic profile information. Most Freelancers will complete Basic profile information when creating an account and entering the fields listed below. If you haven't yet completed these fields, sign into your Elance account, click on your username at the top of the Elance website and click Profile from drop-down menu:

  1. Profile photo

  2. Profile Tagline

  3. Overview

  4. Hourly Rate

  5. Skills

  6. Contact Information

  7. Email verification


80% profile completion

To access another 10 Connects, complete at least 80% of your Freelancer profile.You can see your profile's completion percentage with the profile completeness meter on your profile page, indicated below. Sign into your Elance account, click on your username at the top of the Elance website and click Profile from drop-down menu. The following steps will enable you to quickly achieve 80% or more profile completeness:

  1. Adding files to your Portfolio - click the Edit button next to the Portfolio area of your profile page

  2. Adding Skills - click the Edit button next to the Skills area of your profile page

  3. Verifying your email address - click the Contact Info link on your profile page

  4. Completing ID Verification - click the Get Verified link on your profile page

  5. Taking the Elance Pledge - click the Take the Elance Pledge link from the profile completeness meter

Verifying your phone number

To access your remaining 10 Connects, complete phone verification for your phone number on record. To complete phone verification, click on your username at the top of the Elance website and choose Settings from the drop-down menu. Then, follow the steps listed below.   1. Go to My User Info link on the left panel.
  2. Next to your telephone #, click the verify link.  
  3. You will see a Phone Verification pop-up box. If your phone number is correct, please click continue.  If not, please click the edit phone number link.
  4. Now, you will receive an automated phone call from Elance.  You will be prompted to press the # key on your keypad to acknowledge you were expecting the phone call.  Then, you will be asked to speak the confirmation code or you can use your keypad to enter the numbers that are displayed on your computer screen. Please remember to speak each number slowly and clearly if you choose to speak the numbers on the screen.
  5. Once you have spoken or entered the code successfully, you will receive a message that your phone number has been verified.

Note:  You are given 3 attempts to successfully verify the code.  Please remember to speak slowly and clearly in order for the system to recognize your voice or you can choose to enter the number on your keypad.   If you are unsuccessful in verifying your phone number, you will be able to try again after waiting a 24 hour period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if I downgrade from my premium (paid) membership? Do I need to complete these steps to access all of my Connects?

A: Yes, if you downgrade your account from a premium (paid) plan, these requirements will apply. If you have already completed all of the requirements to receive 40 Connects, you will immediately have access to 40 Connects without needing to complete any additional requirements.


Q: What if I've only completed enough steps to get 10 (or 20, or 30) Connects. How many Connects can I access the next month?

A: The steps required to access your Connects only need to be completed once. In other words, if you have completed the tasks required to access 10/20/30/40 Connects, you will continue to have the same number of Connects available the following month.


Q: I don't use 40 Connects each month. Do I still need to complete all of these steps even though I'm satisfied with 10/20/30?

A: No, you are not required to access all of the available 40 Connects as part of your membership plan. While we encourage you to build a complete profile, many of these steps are optional. If 10/20/30 Connects are sufficient, you can completely only the tasks required to access those Connects.
