How do I cancel my job?

Most jobs on Elance are completed successfully and to the satisfaction of both the Freelancer and Client. However, on those rare occasions when you need to cancel a job, we're here to help. Follow the instructions below to cancel your job or job post. We also make it easy for you to hire someone else!

How do I cancel a job post that has not been awarded?

To cancel a job that has not yet been awarded, please log in to Elance and follow the steps below:

  1. Click the My Elance tab in the top navigation bar and go to your My Jobs page.

  2. Click the Actions drop-down next to the job posting you wish to cancel and select Cancel Job.

  3. Select the reason for the cancellation and Submit. This reason will be shared with the Freelancers who submitted proposals on your job posting.

How do I cancel a ‘Working’ job?

To cancel an active job, please log in to Elance and follow the steps below:

  1. Click the My Elance tab in the top navigation bar and go to your My Jobs page.

  2. Underneath the job name you wish to cancel, click the Actions drop-down and select the Refund, Cancel or Dispute link.

  3. Click the File a Request button.

  4. Select the option Cancel job and enter all relevant information on the form. Click Submit.

Once you submit this form, the cancellation request is sent to the other party to confirm. Upon their confirmation, the job status will reflect the cancellation.  Also at that time, any refunds from Escrow that were indicated on the cancellation form will be processed. To confirm your refund from within your Elance account, visit Manage > Transactions. Please note it can take your issuing credit card company three (3) to five (5) days to post the refund to your statement.

If the Freelancer disputes the cancellation, Elance is here to help and the job will be moved into Dispute Assistance.  For more information on Elance Dispute Assistance, click here.

How do I hire a different Freelancer? Can I re-open or repost my job?

You can hire a new Freelancer (including a qualified Freelancer who previously submitted a proposal to you) and continue working with your current Freelancer by following the steps below.

If you'd like to stop working with your current Freelancer and hire a different one for your active job, follow the steps above to first cancel your active job. Then, click My Elance and follow these steps to pick a different Freelancer.

If you want to hire a Freelancer who already submitted a proposal for a working job:
  • Click on the job name > click Proposals from the menu on the left to go directly to the proposals you previously received for that job (You can also access this page by finding the job on your My Elance/My Jobs page and clicking the Actions drop-down and selecting Proposals). From here, find the Freelancer you would like to award the job to and click Select.
If you want to receive new proposals for the job before selecting a new Freelancer:
  • Click the Actions link next to the job posting you wish to repost. Or, click on the job name to go directly to that job post page. Click Repost Job. Your job will then be reindexed in Job Search results and/or you can begin sending invitations for additional proposals.
