What does it mean that you’ll turn off the ability to work on Elance?

On May 30, 2016, work will come to a close on Elance. To continue working together, clients and freelancers working together will both need to move to Upwork and form a new contract there. After payments close, you will still be able to withdraw funds and access your messages, contacts, and files on Elance into 2017.

  • Work ends on Elance May 30, 2016
      • Freelancers will no longer be able to:
        • Create, edit or delete milestones
        • Submit milestones
        • Submit or edit status reports
        • Submit or edit timesheets
        • Submit or edit invoices
        • Log hours with the Time Tracker
        • Edit rate or contract end date
        • Copy (or merge) their accounts to Upwork
      • Clients will no longer be able to:
        • Create, edit or delete milestones
        • Fund milestones
        • Approve milestones
        • Copy (or merge) their accounts to Upwork
  • Clients have until June 5, 2016 (one week after work comes to a close) to make final payments
  • Any remaining disputes and refunds should be filed by June 30, 2016
  • All remaining unreleased escrow funds will be returned to clients starting in July 2016

How does fee grandfathering work on Upwork?

Fee grandfathering is automatically applied to Upwork contracts with your Elance relationships. All client-freelancer working relationships that began on Elance but transitioned to Upwork are eligible for this fee.

I already have an Upwork account. Can you merge that with my Elance account?

Until May 30, 2016, combining your Elance and Upwork accounts is easy. Individual users will be able to choose between merging and replacing accounts in the invitation that we will email to you. For more information, please refer to our help articles for clients, freelancers, and companies.

What is and isn’t transferred over to Upwork when I merge my accounts?

If you choose to merge your accounts, we will copy your Elance work history, feedback, and reputation to your existing Upwork account. Elance clients see a list of Elance freelancers they’ve worked with on their Upwork My Jobs page. However, some profile data, including your photo, your overview, and your portfolio will not be copied over. Here are tips from a fellow Elance freelancer that made the switch.

How will clients find freelancers from Elance on Upwork?

Clients see a list of freelancers they’ve worked with on Elance in their My Jobs page on Upwork. From this list, they can rehire freelancers in one click, as long as the freelancer has accepted an invitation to Upwork. We are working on a way to display a link to freelancers’ Upwork profiles on their Elance profile. In the meantime, we recommend you send your clients a link to your profile.

Can I invite an Elance freelancer I’ve worked with in the past to submit a proposal for a job I’ve posted on Upwork?

You’ll be able to directly re-engage the Elance freelancers you’ve worked with in the past via your Upwork My Jobs page. If they have not already migrated from Elance, you’ll be able to invite the freelancers to join Upwork with one click. We’ll then notify you when they have created their Upwork accounts and are ready to be rehired.
